the imperceptible electromagnetic world that surrounds us holds information from the sociocultural space that we inhabit, which is normally accessible only by individuals and institutions that legally own and regulate the electromagnetic spectrum. sdr allows us to access centralized information in a tangential way, democratizing and revealing radio at its fullest form.
radio parasites is a sonification of invisible forces, a deployment of audible radio waves in a compilation that ponders about an electromagnetic ecology. using homebrewed antennas and sdr (software defined radio) to capture and process long, medium, short and micro radio waves of the electromagnetic surroundings, the sound is crafted into gritty grainy sounds that evolve into massive drones and echoing vibrations that depict the largest and smallest scales in a series of four compositions.
since the development of open source hardware and software for sdr (software defined radio) almost anyone is be able to receive and transmit radio over a wideband without having to spend a fortune in specialized equipment. sdr provides endless possibilities limited only by the antenna. the range of frequencies that can be captured are the civil and official band, cellular frequencies, wifi, submarine and satellite transmissions, aircraft trajectories and even natural phenomena such as seismic movements and solar flares among others.
